L25 is the oldest matriarch in the Southern Resident orca community. Her distinctive saddle patch makes her easily recognized and she travels with the L12 subgroup of L pod. Estimated to have been born around 1928, she is a living link to a time before many of the challenges her population faces today. During the early part of her life, she and her family would have enjoyed a vast food source of Chinook salmon. Over the years, that food source has dwindled, so the whales must travel further in their never-ending search for food. For those of us who have known her over the years, L25 represents the Southern Residents' deep history and uncertain future. She is a reminder of all that these whales have been through and all we continue to fight for.
